(ART.) Exhibition, 37 Negro Artists.

(ART.) Exhibition, 37 Negro Artists. 8 pages. Original color wrappers, 8½ x 5½ inches; rear wrapper stained, torn, and conserved, otherwise minor wear; signed by a lieutenant on front wrapper. Fort Huachuca, AZ, 16 May 1943

  • Notes: Fort Huachuca had served as a base for Buffalo Soldier regiments since 1913, and during World War Two was the training camp for the 92nd and 93rd Infantry Divisions composed of Black troops. The exhibition originated in a desire to redecorate the fort's officer club for officers, the Mountainview Club, but grew into a major exhibition with the help of several WPA administrators. The camp commander in his introduction noted that it would "provide an opportunity for every officer, soldier and civilian at this station to study this unique collection of American Negro Art . . . a worthy cause of pride in the accomplishment and promise of Negro artists." The speaking program at the opening included Hale Woodruff and Richmond Barthé. 86 pieces were exhibited, including prints and original work by Samuel Brown, William Carter, Eldzier Cortor, Allen Crite, Charles Sebree, Raymond Steth, Dox Thrash, and many others; the mural "Five Great Americans" by Charles White; and sculpture by Lester Mathews and Sargent Johnson. One in OCLC (New York Public Library) and none traced at auction.

With--engraved exhibition to the exhibition opening, 5¼ x 4¼ inches, issued to the same Black lieutenant, Jesse E. Jarman of the 92nd Infantry Division, who would soon be promoted to captain and died in Italy in February 1945; mounted to a piece of scrapbook paper.
