(ART.) (FOLK ART.) Emmeline Sold. Needlepoint representation of a distressed young white woman with her Black female servant laying down behind her, 19x13 1/2 inches; some slight toning to the cloth, very small area of browning or darkening in the upper right corner; in an old frame. Np, probably 19th century

  • Notes: From the title we would presume that Emmeline is the young Black woman who has just been sold, much to the distress of the young white woman. Anti-slavery themes often appeared on 19th-century pieces of needlework.
