(ART.) HARDISON, INGE. Bust of explorer Matthew Henson.

(ART.) HARDISON, INGE. Bust of explorer Matthew Henson. Plaster composite with bronze finish, 8-1/2 inches high; in excellent condition, lacks printed label on the front of the base. Louisville/New York, circa 1967

  • Notes: A very strong image of the Arctic explorer Matthew Henson, created by artist Inge Hardison (1914- ) for the Old Taylor Company in the 1960's. A series Ms. Hardison dubbed her "Hall of Fame" of Black Americans. Though a label under the base with a biographical note on Henson, calls the series "Ingenious Americans." Henson accompanied Robert Peary to the North Pole. Recent scholarship hints that Henson actually reached the Pole first and carried an exhausted Peary along.
