Notes: Lafayette''s interest in emancipation may well have sprung from his relationship with his slave James Armistead during the American Revolution. With Lafayette''s permission, Armistead began to work behind the British lines as a spy. His most important role may have been as a servant in General Cornwallis'' camp, which directly bore on the American victory at Yorktown. In tribute to Lafayette, Armistead adopted the surname of Lafayette for the rest of his life.
