(ART.) LE PAON, JEAN BAPTISTE. General Lafayette at Yorktown, attended by James Armistead.

(ART.) LE PAON, JEAN BAPTISTE. General Lafayette at Yorktown, attended by James Armistead. Photogravure, from the original painting (1783), enhanced by hand-coloring and the addition of three engraved vignettes showing Ben Franklin, George Washington and the American and French flags. 16 3/4 x 12 1/8 (image size); paper size, 26 x 20 inches; some foxing to the wide margins. Paris: H. Figuet, circa 1875

  • Notes: Lafayette''s interest in emancipation may well have sprung from his relationship with his slave James Armistead during the American Revolution. With Lafayette''s permission, Armistead began to work behind the British lines as a spy. His most important role may have been as a servant in General Cornwallis'' camp, which directly bore on the American victory at Yorktown. In tribute to Lafayette, Armistead adopted the surname of Lafayette for the rest of his life.
