(ART.) SHEARER, TED. Two watercolor drawings with WWII themes.

(ART.) SHEARER, TED. Two watercolor drawings with WWII themes. 14x11 and 16x18 inches respectively; the latter with some chips, and mounted to a slightly larger piece of heavier stock paper, both signed and dated "Sgt. Ted Shearer, 1945." Np, 1945

  • Notes: Ted Shearer, artist and cartoonist (1921-1996) sold his first cartoon to New York's Amsterdam News at the age of 16. He is usually associated with his famous cartoon strip "Quincy" which began in 1970, but Shearer had another cartoon series format called "Around Harlem" appearing in the pages of the Amsterdam News during the 1940s. For the cartoons in this series, Shearer signed his work "Sgt. Ted Shearer." The two watercolors we offer here are from that series. See Lynn Igoe, 250 Years of Afro-American Art, page 1092.
