(ART.) Small group relating to Everett Shinn: a signed photo, 4 postcards, and a shawl worn by his wife and model. 7 items in one box; condition generally strong. Various places, 1921-1947

  • Notes: Everett Shinn (1876-1953) was an illustrator and painter associated with the Ashcan School, with a famously complicated romantic life. This small collection relates to his third wife, Gertrude P. McManus Chase Shinn (1889-1954), who married him in 1924 and divorced him in 1932, in part because of his insistence on photographing her in the nude. It includes:

Formal photograph, 9½ x 7 inches, of Shinn by Ira L. Hill of New York, inscribed "To Jocelyn Chase, June 6th, 1921, Everett Shinn," and signed additionally by the photographer on the mat. Not examined out of 13½ x 10-inch frame.

A leaf from "The Red Book Magazine" [February 1928] featuring a short article on Shinn and a photograph of his wife Gertrude Chase Shinn wearing a black lace shawl.

The shawl worn by Mrs. Shinn in the magazine photograph, approximately 24 x 70 inches.

4 postcards written by Shinn to Gertrude Chase, while traveling after he had divorced his fourth wife. He describes a Mississippi plantation with "decayed elegance," New Orleans as "the most astonishing place I have ever seen," Carlsbad Caverns as "miles of hidden beauty," and Nantucket as the place "for perfect rest," and promises to call her at her office. Various places, 1944 and 1947.
