In 1924, Davies embarked on a distinctive group of watercolors documenting his travels in Europe. Devoid of the figures that populated his earlier landscapes, these works are embodied with soft edges with impressionistic contrasts of dark and light in subtle colors. Davies asked his dealer not to show these works, as he felt they were incomplete. When they were exhibited shortly after his death, however, critics compared the watercolors to those of Turner and Whistler.
