In his 1940 exhibition at Alfred Stieglitz's An American Place, Dove aimed to show the viewers harmonious semi-abstract landscapes, each painting and watercolor relating to and contrasting one another in sequence. The landscapes were presented as Dove experienced and felt them, he was not concerned with the factual elements of the natural world. The limited color palette of Spiral Road was especially lauded in its ability to evoke an emotional response. Dove also made a watercolor of Spiral Road, which is held in the collection of the Delaware Art Museum.

The small size of Dove's paintings during the 1940s reflect his circumstances. In 1938 Dove and his wife, artist Helen Torr, moved from Dove's estate in Geneva, New York, to a one-room cottage on the edge of a pond in Centerport, Long Island. Following a heart attack in 1939 and due to various other ailments including Bright's Disease, Dove became quite frail. Despite this, he was able to return to "pure painting" with a renewed vigor. By painting smaller works, Dove was able to produce more despite his limited space and failing health. Some of his most important works are from this late period. Stieglitz and Dove died only a few months apart in 1946, and several of Stieglitz's artists, as well as Dove's estate, became represented by Edith Gregor Halpert's Downtown Gallery. According to an inscription on the back of Spiral Road, the painting was given by Halpert to "MMW". These initials likely refer to Murray M. Wax, an artist and assistant to Halpert during the 1960s. Wax moved to Provincetown full time during the 1990s, where he continued to work for art galleries.
