ARTHUR ROTHSTEIN (1915-1985)

Dust Storm, Cimarron County, Oklahoma.
Silver print, the image measuring 254x330 mm; 10x13 inches, flush mounted, with the Arthur Rothstein Photograph Collection of Grace Rothstein hand stamp, on mount verso. 1936; printed 1960s.

Arthur Rothstein became the first FSA photographer hired by Stryker in 1935. Rothstein worked for the FSA for five years, photographing rural America, but this, his best known image, was taken very early in his career there. For several months of 1936, Rothstein was tasked with living in and photographing the Dust Bowl.

  • Condition: Arthur Rothstein's print of a Dust Strom in Cimarron County, OK is in good condition. The print displays a range of mid-tones.

The print is flush mounted to a period board. In the lower half of the print there are several sporadic instances of cracklure and a few thin linear impressions. In the lower right corner there is a long, thin impression that stretches almost four inches horizontally. Cracklure appears again along the lower edge of the print. Above the farmer's hat is a small, undistracting mounting pimple. Finally, in the upper left corner there is a minor spot of retouching. All issues described in this paragraph can only be seen in raking light and do not distract from the overall composition of the work.

Mount verso has some instances of loss on the very top surface of the board. The mount has slightly warmed with age. With the Arthur Rothstein Photograph Collection of Grace Rothstein hand stamp, on mount verso.

An impressionable image by the FSA photographer, Arthur Rothstein.
