ARTHUR ROTHSTEIN (1915 - 1985) Tenant Farmer, North Carolina * Man on porch with basket (possibly Shenandoah National Park, Virginia).

ARTHUR ROTHSTEIN (1915 - 1985)

Tenant Farmer, North Carolina * Man on porch with basket (possibly Shenandoah National Park, Virginia). September 1935 & October 1935.
Together, 2 silver prints, the images measuring 241x165 mm; 9½x6½ inches, the first with Rothstein's F.S.A. credit stamp and the Farm Security Administration stamp, the typed title and date, and the RA number in pencil, on verso; the second with his F.S.A. credit stamp and the Farm Security Administration stamp and the RA number in pencil on verso.

  • Condition: This pair of vintage Arthur Rothstein photographs are in good to very good condition. Both evidence slight handling imperfections associated with vintage F.S.A. prints, but are rendered in rich, diverse, and clear tones, with detail and textural qualities throughout.

Both prints appear to be ferrotyped, and evidence the very slight inconsistencies associated with that process in strong, raking light. Other notes as follows:

"Tenant Farmer, North Carolina" (September 1935): The surface evidences scattered irregular impressions near the center, a couple other small handling marks, a couple tiny chips at the extreme edges, and tiny pinholes at the top corners and lower center edge. These imperfections are largely visible in strong, raking light.

"Man on porch with basket (possibly Shenandoah National Park, Virginia)" (October 1935): The print evidences tiny pinholes at each of the corners, a short closed tear at the upper edge, and minor scattered handing marks, primarily visible in strong, raking light.

The backs of the prints are overall clean and neat. Both prints appear to be slightly trimmed, based on the markings on verso. This is original to the work, and appears to highlight and center the figures. The first with Rothstein's F.S.A. credit stamp and the Farm Security Administration stamp, the typed title and date, and the RA number in pencil, on verso; the second with his F.S.A. credit stamp and the Farm Security Administration stamp and the RA number in pencil on verso.
