Dow (1857-1922) taught at several major New York arts institutions throughout his career, starting with the Pratt Institute from 1896-1903, the Arts Students League from 1898-1903, and settling at Columbia University Teachers College from 1904-22. Dow's teaching stressed that rather than copying nature, art should be created by elements like color and mass. The current work is likely an academic study for his students espousing his artistic ideas.
