(ARTISTS' MAGAZINES.) Copley, William; editor. S.M.S. [Shit Must Stop]. Numbers 1-6 [complete]. Over 70 original designs and multiples by contemporary artists of Pop, Fluxus, Op Art, Surrealist, New Realist, and Conceptual art including the well-known pieces by Christo, Duchamp, Oppenheim, Baj, Lichtenstein, Nauman, and others, but lacking the Terry Riley cassette tape in #3 and the 2 reel-to-reel tapes of recordings by LaMonte Young /Marian Zazeela and Terry Riley as often encountered (as they were produced in very small editions for prepaid SMS subscribers; both they and the Riley were reissued in new cassettes for the 1988 reissue of SMS). Multiples and contents sheets loose as issued in 6 original printed folders; each 356x177 mm; 14x7 inches; publisher's cardboard boxes. Publisher's contents list laid in separate folder. New York: Letter Edged in Black Press, 1968

  • Notes: one of about 2000 sets of the groundbreaking production spearheaded by the Surrealist artist Copley and his open-ended collective, intended as a venue for artists to have their work reproduced as multiples and therefore to reach, and be acquired by, audiences outside of galleries and museums. "Shit Must Stop" suggested the countercultural ethos that guided its attempt to liberate artists from the restrictions of the gallery space. "`It's like making a painting putting this thing together. Art has left the canvas. It's expanded its activity and every kind of activity has become art'"--Allen, page 297.
