(ASSIENTO.) The Treaty Concluded and Signed at Madrid, on the Fifth of October, N. S. 1750. Between the Ministers Plenipotentiaries of their Brittanick and Catholic Magesties (cover title). Text in English French and Spanish. 16 pages. 4to, sewn; disbound, removed from a larger volume; first and last leaves a trifle dusty. London: Edward Owen, 1750 E800/1,200 FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, published simultaneously in Spain. "Official" termination of the notorious 1713 Assiento Treaty between Spain and Great Britain, which gave Britain exclusive rights to the slave trade. Following years of war beginning in 1739, peace was established at Aix-la-Chapelle with this new treaty, a remark-able piece of British negotiation. It officially ended the Assiento agreement-with Spain paying Britain 100,000 pounds as compensation. ( However, Britain contin-ued the slave trade until 1807, thus having its cake and eating it too.)
