AUGUSTO GIACOMETTI

GRAUBUNDEN. Circa 1924
39 3/4x25 inches. Wolfsberg, Zurich.
Condition B+: tape stain in top margin; wrinkles and creases in image.
Giacometti was one of Eugene Grasset's most famous students (along with Paul Berthon) but his graphic work shows no signs of the Art Nouveau tendency of his mentor. Here, with "stains of vivid color close to abstraction and with an uncommon boldness of composition" (Weill p. 245) he depicts a couple relaxing on a hillside, shaded by an enormous parasol. Alps 140, Swiss Tourist 40.
