Augustus John was one of the most prominent artists working in Britain during the early 1900s. He and his older sister, the artist Gwen John, left Wales where they were born and raised, to attend the Slade School of Art in London during the late 1890s. Augustus John's student work was highly praised and his first solo exhibition occurred in 1899 at the Carfax Gallery in London only one year after his graduation. In 1901, John became an art instructor at University College in Liverpool and formed a friendship with John Sampson, a librarian and a scholar of gypsy life. This friendship sparked a mutual fascination with Britain's gypsy people and culture, and John even traveled by gypsy caravan with his family and Dorothy "Dorelia" McNeill. McNeill, John's model and lover, often appears in his art in peasant or gypsy costume, with long skirts and scarves.
