AUTHENTIC PHOTOGRAPHIC RECORD OF CULLINAN CUTTING ASSCHER, JOSEPH & CIE. The Cullinan [cover title]. Table of contents printed in Spencerian type

AUTHENTIC PHOTOGRAPHIC RECORD OF CULLINAN CUTTING ASSCHER, JOSEPH & CIE. The Cullinan [cover title]. Table of contents printed in Spencerian type simulating handwriting, trimmed as called for in Sinkankas, and 15 photographic plates. Oblong 4to, original gilt-lettered maroon cloth, dampspotting to right outer area of front cover, other light wear; hinges cracked, title and one photo loose from hinges. [Amsterdam, 1908]

  • Notes: first edition published for presentation only, and Inscribed "With Joseph Asscher & Co's Compliments" in ink, at head of contents leaf. The Cullinan was the largest diamond ever found and was entrusted to the company for cleaving and cutting for the English Crown Jewels. The photographs, often reproduced in later gemological works, show the progressive cutting of the gem, Joseph Asscher "operating" on it, the room especially built for polishing the stone, the instruments for cutting, the strong room where it was deposited at night, and images of the employees and factory. "This is the sole authentic photographic record of the cutting of the Cullinan. Rare"--Sinkankas 228.
