(AVIATION.) Sequence of 12 photographs depicting the Hindenburg disaster. Silver prints, 7 ¾ x 9¾ inches, numbered on verso but otherwise without photographer markings or captions; first one worn with a tape repair, last one with two chips, the remainder with only minor wear. Lakehurst, NJ, 1937

  • Notes: A sequence of official Navy photographs which begins with the dirigible coming in for refueling at the Naval Air Station, includes ten showing the progress of the fire, and concludes with a final aerial shot of its remains.

Provenance: these photographs came from the collection of John F. Homeyer, an engineer who was selected by the Hindenburg Corporation to refill the hydrogen gas bags of the air ship. During the explosion, he managed to save the life of a young boy who had been dropped from the gondola structure by his mother. For his bravery, Homeyer was presented with one of the three original sets depicting the tragedy. Swann sale, 13 December 2007, lot 360.

With--the original "Wave Guide" Griffiss Air Force base newspaper from 25 October 1956 which tells Homeyer's story and reproduces 6 of these 12 photographs. Also included is a 5½-inch piece of wood painted in crimson and black which is believed to have come from inside the great blimp.
