(AZTEC.) After Christoph Weiditz. Ornatus Foeminæ in India, ex Pulcherrimis Plumis Concinnatus. Woodcut engraving, 9 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches; moderate foxing, fragment of a watercolor painting of an architectural detail on verso. Np, circa 1580-1600

  • Notes: Depicts an Aztec woman wearing a native cloak, skirt, and headdress. This woodcut was done after a 1529 drawing, first appeared in 1577 with a slightly different caption as part of Weigel's Habitus Praeceptorium, and was later reused in other works. with--an unidentified hand-colored engraving of an American Indian king and queen.
