- Notes: first edition, in the scarce large-paper issue, "of which only a few copies were taken for presentation" (Lande). "One of the fundamental books on Arctic exploration . . . The expedition traveled to the Great Slave Lake and discovered the Great Fish River, or Back River, which they traced to the frozen ocean. Back''s narrative is full of details about the Cree, Chippewa, Coppermine, and other Indian tribes, upon whom the members of the expedition were obliged to depend during a terrible winter"--Hill 42.
