BAKER, RICHARD GREY. Baker's New Map of the University and Town of Cambridge.

BAKER, RICHARD GREY. Baker''s New Map of the University and Town of Cambridge. Large hand-colored engraved plan of Cambridge and its surrounding areas on two sheets joined. 42x37 1/4 inches sheet size; mounted to canvas and later wooden rollers, lightly toned with occasional scattered spotting, upper left edge with minor damage and a clean cut into engraved border. Cambridge: Baker, Earith, Hunts and T. Stevenson, 1830

  • Notes: A finely detailed and beautiful example of large-scale English cartography. The central plan extends to the agricultural reaches of Chesterton, Granchester and Trumpington Parishes. A reference key in the lower right corresponds to the university''s individual colleges and the town''s many churches. Baker goes on to detail other notable sites such as the hospital, post office and tennis court. The delineation of the town is quite specific and highly accurate for the date of publication as it shows all of the King''s College buildings erected in the 1820''s but does not depict several sites that were demolished in 1828. "In 1830, schemes must have been afoot for future building projects, in the university and town, but Baker only deals with what is before him. Thus buildings erected in 1831 are not depicted. Baker''s map can, therefore, be taken to be a snapshot of the topography of Cambridge in 1830" (Bendall). OCLC records only one copy.
