A fine copy. Baltimore: John Toy, 1845 E600-900 First Edition Of The First Book On Benjamin Banneker. Banneker 1731-1806 , was the first African-American man of science. Entirely self-taught, He was a clockmaker, astronomer, and the publisher- writer of a number of almanacs. He was well acquainted with such notable contemporaries as Thomas Jefferson, to whom He wrote an open letter "To the Secretary of State a pamphlet strongly rebuking the holding of slaves Philadelphia 1792 Banneker also knew and corresponded with Benjamin Franklin, discussing inventions, astronomy, etc. Despite these relationships, Banneker and his work went largely ignored and unrecognized.
