(BASEBALL--NEW YORK YANKEES.) Barrow, Edward Grant. Pay order for a carpenter at Yankee Stadium.

WHO BUILT "THE HOUSE THAT RUTH BUILT"? (BASEBALL--NEW YORK YANKEES.) Barrow, Edward Grant. Pay order for a carpenter at Yankee Stadium. Autograph manuscript signed on one sheet, 8 x 5 inches; paper clip stain on one margin. [New York, April 1923?]

  • Notes: This document reads in full "Charles H. Derleth, carpenter, stadium. $45 week to Dec 1st, then $40 to April 1st. B." It was found among the papers of the Yankees'' Hall of Fame executive Ed Barrow and appears to be in his hand, signed with his distinctive circled "B." It seems probable that this pay order was issued during the construction of Yankee Stadium, which was built in the winter of 1922-23. Charles Derleth appears in the 1920 census as a 38-year-old carpenter living in the Bronx, just a few blocks south of the stadium.
    with
--two other documents from the same archive: a 1924 letter from the Melrose Athletic Association to Barrow, with Barrow''s penciled note to "Col." (team owner Colonel Ruppert), signed "Ed"; and an undated order to refund a ticket-holder on the letterhead of the American League Baseball Club of New York, signed with a circled "B."
