Strong group of 39 photographs of EGYPT, including views of ruins at LUXOR, KARNAK and PHILAE. Albumen prints, 8 1/4 x 10 1/2 inches, 9 signed by the photographer in the negative, with penciled notations, in an unidentified hand, on verso; plus 2 photochromes. 1880s Established first in Cairo in 1862, and then in Luxor from 1870 on, Antoine Beato was the premier photographer of Egypt. This selection shows him exercising his considerable talent in the vicinity of his studio in Luxor, a town in Upper Egypt built on the ancient city of Thebes. Luxor is the locale of structures built by Amenhotep, Ikhnaton, and Ramses II.
