BEATO, FELIX (1834/1835-circa 1907)
Pair of photographs from the 1871 US Navy Mission to Korea. Albumen prints, 9 1/2x7 and 10 1/2x8 inches (24.1x17.8 and 26.7x20.3 cm.), mounted. 1871

  • Notes: In May/June 1871 the US Navy conducted a military mission to Korea in an attempt to open that country to trade. Beato obtained permission to accompany and photograph this expedition; his photographs show the fighting that ensued and the Korean people encountered by the Americans.
