Provenance: acquired directly from the artist; Richard A. Long, Atlanta; thence by descent to his estate.

Exhibited: Beauford Delaney: A Retrospective, the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, April 9 - July 2, 1978, with the label on the frame back.

Richard Long did not meet Beauford Delaney until 1957 when the composer Howard Swanson introduced them in Paris. Their friendship grew with Long's increasingly longer stays in Paris for his academic research in the early 1960s. By 1964, he visited Beauford Delaney often in his studio in Rue Vercingétorix where they had long discussions on his art and culture in general. According to Long, "I sat for portraits--one in pastel and one in oil-- off and on in 1964 and 1965 during my visits to Paris from Poitiers, where I was working on my dissertation. It was in 1965 that Beauford did the oil portrait of me, which is now on view at the High Museum." Courtesy of the blog Les Amis de Beauford Delaney, originally posted April 1, 2010.
