BEAUTIFUL SET IN ORIGINAL CLOTH CARROLL, LEWIS. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland * Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There. 42 and 50

BEAUTIFUL SET IN ORIGINAL CLOTH CARROLL, LEWIS. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland * Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There. 42 and 50 illustrations by John Tenniel. Together, 2 volumes. 8vo, original red gilt-pictorial cloth. Alice's Adventures is a bright copy, only slightly rubbed; blue endpapers, split between half-title and frontispiece, the verso of which bears the tipped-in original bookseller's description, professional repairs to clean tears on several leaves including title, rear free endpaper reinforced on verso (with some adhesive bleed-through); bookplate. Through the Looking-Glass somewhat darkened, few minor spots on covers; green endpapers, hinges cracked, split between F8 and G weakening adjacent signatures, bookplate and owner's Christmas gift inscription from 1871. Housed in cloth chemises within custom polished red calf slipcase with gilt-stamped sides resembling the two distinct volumes and decoratively gilt spines, front moderately scuffed. London: Macmillan, 1866; 1872

  • Notes: first published editions, first issues, of carroll's most famous tales, in original cloth. Alice was originally printed in 1865 but, because it was very poorly printed, was never offered for sale to the public. Most copies were sold off to Appleton's in the United States and sold by them with a new 1866 title-page. Macmillan, in the meantime, reprinted the book and issued it right before Christmas 1865, with the 1866 title-page, as here. Williams, Madan, Green 46; 84.
