BEDRICH GRUNZWEIG Coney Island. Silver print, 1951; printed later. 10 1 / 2 inches square, with the photographer's signature, title and date, in pencil, and the photographer's handstamp on verso. E1,000/1,500 An immigrant from the Czech Republic, Grunzweig's first job was at the Czechoslovak pavilion during the World's Fair in New York. He later worked for the United Nations producing documentary films and eventually was on the staff of the International Center for Photography. In his photographs he captures the tumultuous, diverse life of a changing New York in a uniquely intimate and intense way, reflecting not only the situation but his own experience.
