BELLOW, SAUL. Group of 8 Autograph Letters Signed, and 4 Typed Letters Signed, to Ralph G. Ross, on a variety of topics, including his Nobel Prize in Literature, marrying and divorcing his wives, John Berryman, writing Herzog, and academic success. Format and condition vary. Vp, 1960-80

  • Notes: New York, 21 Nov[ember circa 1961]: ". . . I have offers from Chicago, Northwestern and I think Yale. The truth is that I haven't much interest in any of them. I'm well into a book which makes Henderson look like the Scoutmasters Handbook. . . ."
Río Piedras, [1961]: ". . . [Y]ou told me I didn't understand the fabric of society and a word to the wise has made a student of me. Not a cynic, but a student. . . ."
Tivoli, 12 June [19]61: ". . . [P]hilosophy is utopian. It's all about how we would be if our madness ended, and that's beautiful but improbable. It put Sidney Hook in the midst of the hymn-singers. I see now why existentialism will never be a philosophy. . . ."
[Chicago], 22 March [19]77: ". . . I don't think the Prize is going to make much difference. It's been a very confusing and delusive, but the delusions aren't hard to shake off. Some of the contemporary literarary winners have made wonderful comments about Stockholm. Seferis said it allowed him, after long effort, to be nobody, to be unnoticed, as Homer said of Ulysses. The noise dies down, and then you find your scale. . . ."
Chicago, 15 June [19]80: ". . . I sometimes wonder what one can get out of Barfield if one hasn't learned the 'system.' Some of it is very curious . . . the conviction that the law of the conservation of energy is all a mistake (this idea has too many poetic vibrations to be dismissed). My friends refuse to take any of this seriously. I forgive them as a friend should . . . ."
Several of these letters appear in Saul Bellow: Letters, ed. Taylor, 2010.
