Benjamin of Tudela, also known as Benjamin ben Jonah, was a Jewish medieval traveler who visited western Asia sometime around 1165-1173, a century before Marco Polo, and penned an account of his experiences. Benjamin's observations and notes on the Jewish communities he visited are quite valuable. Born in the Kingdom of Navarre, he journeyed south through the Iberian Peninsula, scholars believe, reverted north to sail from Marseilles, and thence along coastal Italy and Greece. He crossed to Constantinople, Rhodes, Cyprus, Antioch, Palestine, Damascus, Baghdad, Persia. He then crossed the Persian Gulf to India, Ceylon, and possibly China, returning by the overland route to Cairo, Alexandria, and finally re-crossing the Mediterranean, landing at Sicily, and then Rome.
