BENJAMIN WEST Male Nude (Barberini Faun Study).

BENJAMIN WEST
Male Nude (Barberini Faun Study).

Pencil on bluish gray laid paper, 1760s. 117x178 mm; 4 5/8x7inches.

In 1760, sponsored by two wealthy Philadelphia patrons, Benjamin West (1738-1820) traveled to Italy where he gained further experience copying after the Italian Renaissance masters.

The current drawing is likely a study of the antique marble known as the 'Barberini Faun' as it was in the collection of Francesco Barberini (1597-1679) and housed in the Palazzo Barberini, Rome, until it was sold in 1799.
