BENNETT, ARNOLD. Two Autograph Manuscripts Signed, each with numerous holograph corrections throughout, each an article from his weekly column, "Books and Persons," published under the pseudonym Jacob Tonson in the London Evening Standard, 1926-31. Signed in the byline on the first page of each article. The first, concerning children''s books, reminiscing about books from his own childhood and considering the writings of Juliana Ewing. The second, apologizing for having offended anyone in having attributed the death of Balzac to his consumption of too much coffee, and reviewing the detective novels of J.J. Connington [Alfred Walter Stewart]. Together 4 1/2 pages, small 4to, written on rectos of separate sheets; pin holes at upper left corner, minor loss to left edge of one leaf affecting few words of text. (MRS) London, 12 December 1927; 14 January 1929

  • Notes: 1927: ". . . I don''t think that children are half so mysterious as grown-ups; but they are fairly mysterious. What literature do they really both respect and enjoy? . . ."
