BERENICE ABBOTT (1898 - 1991) 154 Fourth Avenue, Brooklyn. 1936.

BERENICE ABBOTT (1898 - 1991)

154 Fourth Avenue, Brooklyn. 1936.
Silver print, the image measuring 191x241 mm; 7½x9½ inches, the mount 451x362 mm; 17¾x14¼ inches, and a mounted overmat, slightly larger, with Abbott's block-lettered signature in pencil on mount recto, and her signature, title, negative number, and Federal Art Project W.P.A. notations in pencil, her Commerce St. stamp, and a W.P.A. Exhibition Department label with her typed credit, title, and negative number, on mount verso.

  • Condition: Berenice Abbott's "154 Fourth Avenue, Brooklyn" (1936) is in very good condition. The vintage print is rich and dimensional, with exceptionally fine range of tones and detail throughout.

With close inspection, it is possible to find an isolated area of what appears to be surface rubbing or a dampstain with some fiber residue at the extreme lower left edge, representing a narrow band beginning at the corner and traveling midway through the car windows at the edge of the image area. This is not immediately apparent, and not distracting. The far edges of the image area (there are no margins) show a couple minuscule chips, but otherwise the surface of the print is clean, bright, and neat.

The print is mounted, with an original overmat glued to the front. The exhibition presentation is original to the work. The mounted overmat evidences scattered soiling from handling and small chips at the corners. Mount verso is also lightly soiled with some surface rubs, not obscuring the information present.

With Abbott's block-lettered signature in pencil on mount recto, and her signature, title, negative number, and Federal Art Project W.P.A. notations in pencil, her Commerce St. stamp, and a W.P.A. Exhibition Department label with her typed credit, title, and negative number, on mount verso.
