BERENICE ABBOTT (1898-1991)
Department of Docks and Police Station, Pier A, Hudson River, N.Y. 1936; printed 1979.
Silver print, the image measuring 15½x19½ inches (39.4x49.5 cm.), the mount 24x30 inches (61x76.2 cm.), with Abbott's block-lettered signature and the edition notation 54/60 in pencil on mount recto, and the portfolio stamp on mount verso.

WITH--Elizabeth McCausland. New York in the Thirties as Photographed by Berenice Abbott. Oblong 4to, photo-pictorial wrappers. New York: Dover Publications, Inc. (1973)

  • Condition: Berenice Abbott's "Department of Docks and Police Station, Pier A, Hudson River, N.Y." (1936; printed 1979) is in good condition. The print is contrasty and rich, with bright, clear tones and lively detail.

There are two parallel diagonal creases at the upper right corner. A couple tiny rubs can be found near the top center image area, but these largely go unnoticed unless viewing the print quite closely in strong, raking light. There are two small circular areas of very slight warming, one at the far left edge (to the left of the tower in the background) and another at the upper right (within the sky), both possibly related to retouching. These dime-size shifts are not distracting, but noted for the purposes of a detailed report. The sky also shows scattered small specs, all of which appear to be in the negative, and not on the surface of the print.

The mount is very lightly soiled from handling, and two small strips of mounting board have been hinged from verso in order to attach to an overmat.

With Abbott's block-lettered signature and the edition notation 54/60 in pencil on mount recto, and the portfolio stamp on mount verso.

This print is accompanied by Elizabeth McCausland's New York in the Thirties as Photographed by Berenice Abbott. The wrappers are worn, with diagonal creases in the upper right of the front cover and wear along the edges. An exceptionally soft diagonal crease is also possible to find on the first several pages internally, but this is minor. The binding is tight and the illustrations bright.
