BERENICE ABBOTT (1898-1991) Norris Dam construction, Tennessee.

BERENICE ABBOTT (1898-1991)

Norris Dam construction, Tennessee.
Silver print, the image measuring 241x190 mm; 9½x7½ inches, with Abbott's signature and title in pencil, two reproduction stamps (including a Roto Copy stamp) with notations in pencil, and other various reproduction notations in pencil, on verso. 1935.

Norris Dam was the first major project for the Tennessee Valley Authority, which had been created in 1933 to bring economic development to the region and control the rampant flooding that had long plagued the Tennessee Valley. The infrastructure project was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016. The Tennessee Valley Authority was formed in 1933 as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal legislation.

  • Condition: Berenice Abbott's "Norris Dam construction" is in overall very good condition. The print is on a matte paper, with lush, rich tonalities and a great deal of detail throughout. The rendering of sunlight on the massive structure speaks to Abbott's skill in depicting build environments.

Upon close inspection in strong, raking light, it is possible to find some slight surface imperfections near the corners. This includes a soft vertical crease near the lower left corner, a diagonal crease at the far upper left corner, and a few other very small and scattered handling creases, all very close to the edges (the print has no margins). There are also a few tiny scattered spec-sized chips at the edges. Though visible, these imperfections are confined to the edges and do not detract from the print quality.

Print verso evidences remnants of a prior mount, including both glue and paper remnants, at the upper and lower edges. This does not obscure her signature, and does not impact print recto. Also with the title in pencil, two reproduction stamps (including a Roto Copy stamp) with notations in pencil, and other various reproduction notations in pencil, on verso.
