Bernard Villemot became one of the most recognizable poster designers of his generation, with a style that emulates cartoons and exudes humor and cheerfulness. In the early 1930s, he studied with Paul Colin, and Villemot's work from this time reflects a more curvilinear, Art Deco approach than his later work. In 1949, his early works were exhibited in Paris with those of Raymond Savignac, with whom Villemot is most closely associated. Over the next few decades, Villemot was prolific in his advertising designs for companies like Bally, Perrier, Air France, and Orangina. This poster is an advertisement for a youth exhibition held in the form of a train show, and the image was also used on the front of a 1948 flyer for the "Camarades de liberté." The exhibition, which came at a time of national post-war recovery, addressed the economic, social, and political issues facing a generation of French youth, encouraging people to ask questions about what opportunities were available for young citizens, and how better to serve their needs and recognize their achievements. This simple and dynamic design, a train and its plume of smoke weave in and around each other as the engine pulls off into the distance, captures the harmony of progress. Although it is not a travel poster, one cannot help but think of other train images from the era. rare. Villemot / Bazin p. 45.
