Bernhardt, Wall (1872-1956) Greenwich Village Types Tenements & Temples, presentation copy.

Bernhardt, Wall (1872-1956)
Greenwich Village Types Tenements & Temples, presentation copy.

New York: [Privately printed and published by the artist, ca. 1920].

Very scarce early state of the first edition, quarto; signed, inscribed, numbered copy no. 8, and dated June 24th, 1920 by Wall with "To a good friend" on preliminary blank; with etched title, index, and 21 plates depicting New York City's Greenwich Village each signed by the artist in the lower margin, tissue guards nicely preserved; bound in original orange boards, with manuscript title inked on the front cover, likely by Wall himself (some rubbing and small areas of loss to boards, joints starting, board edges exposed); 9 1/2 x 8 1/2 in.

Greenwich Village Types Tenements & Temples was originally conceived as a set of 10 etchings in early 1920. The present copy was presumably printed pre-June 24, 1920, thus predating the assumed 1921 first book edition. Two later states [i.e., editions] are documented: a limited edition of 26 copies in 1930, and a slightly larger edition of 50 in 1947, described by Wall as the third state. This very early copy of presumed first state, is an exceedingly rare example of Wall's ode to "the Montmartre of America." (Weber, p. 31)
