BERNSTEIN, LEONARD. Autograph Manuscript Signed, a high school exam essay on religion and society, Signed in full at the top of the first page and additionally signed "Bernstein" at the top of the second. 3 1/2 pages, two large 8vo sheets ruled paper; two holes punched, smudging to first page. Np, 29 April 1935

Bernstein continues later in the essay, "Every time I read of the great ones - Confucious, Lao-Tze, Moses, Jesus - I cannot help thinking that the atheists are losing something great... Religion is based on faith - a straw to cling to - and faith is based on fear. Fear will never leave the human heart..."
