BETTE DAVIS
Typed letter signed by Davis, concerning the start date for production of All About Eve (1950). March 8, 1950.
2 pages, 8 1/2x11 inches. Staple holes in the top left corners.
Claudette Colbert was originally intended to star in the lead role, but she injured her back just prior to filming. In a bind, the role was offered to Gertrude Lawrence, but Joseph Mankiewicz objected to her demands. Thus, the part fell to Bette Davis -- who filmed all her scenes in 16 days while she was going through a divorce (hence her raspy voice). It would arguably be her greatest performance.
All items are offered for sale subject to Swann Galleries' standard terms and conditions of sale, which are published in our catalogues and are posted below.
