Folio, incomplete; lacking all before f1 [midway through chapter 33 in the book of Moses]; and many other random pages throughout; consisting of approximately 200 leaves, the contents bound in a confusing order; facsimile pages at beginning and end; title for the Apocrypha present, along with title page for the New Testament; otherwise very incomplete; bound in early gold-tooled boards with bosses featuring an embossed Tudor rose; contents stained and occasionally torn with loss; 12 1/8 x 7 3/4 in.

The Great Bible translation ordered by Henry VIII was first published in 1539, with text based mainly on the Tyndale Bible (1525) and prepared by Miles Coverdale, who worked from Vulgate and German translations to supply material not included in the Tyndale version.

  • Condition: Text begins with a single leaf from Genesis [folio xxiii], followed by f1 [folio xli]; f8, FF3-6, FF8, GG-HH8, II1-5, Eee4-5, OO-QQ8, RR1-3, II7-8, KK-LL8, MM1, Lll5-8, Mmm8, SS2, SS5, SS8 [3 SS single leaves], TT2, Aaa2-6, Ddd8, BB4-5 [folios 147 &148, title for the Apocrypha], Eee8 [singlet], Fff-Kkk8 (lacking Iii6), SS1, A1-6, B3-6, C-D8, E1-5, G2-8, H-K8, L1-7, M8, N1-7, O1-10.
