Integral blanks present. 17 parts in 8 volumes, bound slightly out of order as listed below. 16mo, 113x68 mm, 16th-century calf with gilt arabesque centerpiece on covers, vellum pastedowns from medieval Latin manuscript (of an abridgment?) of the Sentences of Peter Lombard, bindings worn overall; contents generally quite clean, neat marginal verse numbering in ink in an early hand throughout Volume 1, printer's woodcut device on first 2 title pages hand-colored at an early date. [Paris: Robert Estienne, 1544-46]

  • Notes: Attractive set of the second Estienne Hebrew Bible and first in small format, following the 1539-44 quarto edition. "This 'pocket' Hebrew Bible has always been regarded as one of the most impressive examples of Hebrew printing of the French Renaissance" (Schreiber). From the collection of the Scottish politician and bibliophile Andrew Fletcher of Saltoun (1653-1716), "almost certainly the largest private library in Scotland at the time" (ODNB), with his signature on the title pages.
