Bible in Latin. Old and New Testament.

Biblia Sacra.

Nuremberg: Joan. Petreium, 1527.
Octavo, title page printed within a pious woodcut border; in roman letter, two columns throughout, many early inscriptions to fly leaves, title, pastedowns, etc.; very nicely preserved in full period alum-tawed pigskin over wooden boards, clasps and catches intact, the binding decorated in blind with curious stamps depicting cups and bottles with other small tools including a single flower, the IHS on a banner, and a rolled flower tool; (some worming to boards, spine abraded, endcap renewed, structurally sound); printed by Petreius, who also printed the first edition of Copernicus's De Revolutionibus; 7 x 5 in.

"Why is this book in a collection of early astronomy? Because the printer, Petreius, is also the printer of the original edition of Copernicus' De Revolutionibus. Both books employ the set of middle-sized initial letters designed by Hans Sebald Behaim; here, typically, these initials give clearer impressions than 16 years later in Copernicus's treatise." (From a note typed up by Professor Gingerich and inserted in this copy.)
