- Notes: first edition of an Italian adaptation of moralistic animal tales from the Panchantra, a Sanskrit story collection dating from at least the 6th-century A.D. After passing through Pahlavi, Arabic, and Hebrew versions, the stories became widely known in Europe as the Fables of Bidpai via the 13th-century Latin of Giovanni da Capua and subsequent vernacular translations, influencing the works of Perrault, La Fontaine, and Grimm. Adams B1997; Carpenter & Prichard, pages 393-94; Gamba 1370; Harvard-Mortimer/Italian 65.
