- Notes: first edition of bierce''s first book, inscribed to author charles warren stoddard in the year of publication. This issue preceded the American edition. Bierce had just married a San Francisco socialite and her parents sent the couple to London. He remained there for several years, publishing three of his early works. Stoddard was in London as part of a tour of the continent at the time of this inscription.
