BILLY NAME (1940-2016)

Group of three photographs from Max's Kansas City depicting Andy Warhol, Brigid Berlin, Nico, Ondine, and Rene Ricard. 1968.
Silver prints, the images measuring 159x114 mm; 6¼x4½ inches, one with Name's signature in ink, and two with Name's signature, caption, and date in ink, and his credit stamp on verso.

William George Linich (Billy Name) was briefly linked with Andy Warhol romantically, but collaborated more with Warhol as a long-term friend. He became the photographer and archivist for the Factory, where he lived until 1970.

  • Condition: Billy Name's "Group of three photographs from Max's Kansas City depicting Andy Warhol, Brigid Berlin, Nico, Ondine, and Rene Ricard" is a lively and energetic group of candid snapshots of the iconic friend group eating and drinking at the equally iconic night club/restaurant. The prints are overall in very good condition.

The photographs are ferrotyped and under raking light the surfaces of the prints display the slight inconsistencies associated with that process. A few very faint and superficial handling marks may also be found, but these are minor, and not apparent under typical viewing conditions. The prints are that are reproduced as our first and second catalogue images evidence a faint stray ink mark in the top frame (visible in the catalogue image). Under typical viewing conditions these do not detract from the overall presentation of the works.

There are no margins and the far edges show some very light chipping of the emulsion, also consistent with their origin. The versos are clean and bright, one with Name's signature in ink, and two with Name's signature, caption, and date in ink, and his credit stamp on verso.
