(BLACK MEMORABILIA.) American Sampler.

(BLACK MEMORABILIA.) American Sampler. With the young lady's initials "K.R." and no other sign of authorship. Various colored silk threads on a linen field. 28-1/2x12 inches; some occasional light wear; a few letters and stitches restored. Np, 1839

  • Notes: A classic nineteenth century American sampler with numerous alphabets and numbers. The typical manner in which young ladies were taught their Reading, Writing and 'Rithmatic. This unusually large sampler has the added charm of two African-American figures in the bottom field, a man and a woman who seem to be dancing. Only the second sampler with an African-American theme that we have handled.
  • Condition: All items are offered for sale subject to Swann Galleries' standard terms and conditions of sale, which are published in our catalogues.
