(BLACK PANTHERS--COMMITTEE ON INTERNAL SECURITY REPORT.) Gun Barrel Politics. The Black Panther Party, 1966-1971. Illustrated. ix, [ii], [1]-145, vii pages. 8vo, original printed white wrappers, stapled. An excellent copy. Washington, 1971

  • Notes: In October of 1969, the House Committee on Internal Security began an investigation of the Black Panther Party. The study was conducted under the direction of Richard Howard Ichord Jr. (1926-1992), a fervent anti-Communist, who had the distinction of being the last chairman of the House Un-American Activities Committee, the "brainchild" of Wisconsin Senator Joe McCarthy. The investigation of the Panthers was conducted with considerably more zeal than the Communist witch-hunts of the 1950's. The F.B.I and local California police in general waged a deadly war against the Panthers, all documented here. The Report is certainly one-sided, but it is fascinating to see how the Government infiltrated and persecuted the party. The Report describes Malcolm X as "The Patron Saint" of the movement. Scarce. While many copies appear in institutional holdings, this is the first copy we have seen.
