(BLACK PANTHERS.) Free Huey Rally.

(BLACK PANTHERS.) Free Huey Rally. Black and white poster 17x23-1/4 inches, linen-backed [San Francisco, 1968]

  • Notes: After many confrontations with the police, real violence erupted on October 28th, 1967. Huey Newton and others were on neighborhood "patrol," when they were stopped by officer John Frey and his partner Herbert Heanes. Frey attempted to search and disarm Newton while Heanes called for back-up. When they arrived shots were fired. No one is certain what happened next, but Frey was shot dead, his partner wounded and Newton shot in the stomach. Neither Frey's nor Newton's gun was found. Newton of course was jailed. The Panthers claimed that all three had been shot by the police.
