(BLACK PANTHERS.) Original file photographs of the alleged "Black Panther bomb factory" where Fred Bennett was killed. 3 photographs, each about 8 x 12 inches, each stamped with "Photo by . . . Stone," "Received Examiner Reference Library," and captioned on verso; minor wear. [California], 22 April 1971

  • Notes: These photographs were taken to accompany a controversial blockbuster story on the Black Panthers by San Francisco Examiner reporter Ed Montgomery which ran on 20 April 1971. He reported on the discovery of the charred remains of Black Panther activist Fred Bennett at a secluded Panther "bomb factory" in the Santa Cruz mountains. Bennett had allegedly been executed on Bobby Seale''s orders for sleeping with his wife; others have suggested that Bennett was killed for being an informer, or that the FBI engineered the killing. The photographs show a decrepit rural cabin, trash, beer cans, and possibly a few bomb parts. One depicts the reporter Montgomery striding toward the cabin door. These are the original prints from the Examiner''s files--not widely distributed wire photos. with --a wire photo titled "Arsenal Seized from Panther Stronghold," New Orleans, 16 September 1970.
