(BLIND.) [Samuel Gridley Howe.] The Blind Child's Second Book.

(BLIND.) [Samuel Gridley Howe.] The Blind Child's Second Book. 57, [2] leaves of embossed text. Oblong 8vo, contemporary 1/2 calf, minor wear; lacking leaf 28 (with a duplicate of 29 in its stead), early owner's label offsetting slightly to title page, otherwise minimal wear and foxing to contents. Boston: New England Institution for the Education of the Blind, 1836

  • Notes: A book printed in raised Boston Line Type, a precursor to Braille which used the modified shapes of actual letters. The book contains the Ten Commandments and a series of lessons, concluding with a description of the solar system illustrated by two full-page diagrams. This copy bears the ownership label of Sylvester C. Robinson of Salem, MA (1808-1883), who is listed in the 1880 census as disabled but not as blind; he was the uncle of Henrietta Robinson "Hetty" Green, the famous "Witch of Wall Street." OCLC lists only 4 surviving copies, only one of them apparently complete.
