BLYDEN, EDWARD WILMOT. Photographic portrait in cabinet card format, on standard mount marked Mayall's Photographic Studio, London; Inscribed and Signed by Blyden on the verso. London, circa 1880

  • Notes: Edward Wilmot Blyden (1832-1912) was a West African nationalist born in St. Thomas of free parents. He attempted to study theology in New York but was turned away because of race. He emigrated to Liberia in 1851 to continue his education. Blyden is the father of Pan-Africanism and the natural inspiration for such leaders of the later "Negritude" movement as Aimee Cesaire and Leopold Senghor.
